How to create a Binance API key (read-only)

Step-by-step guide to generate and configure your read-only Binance API key for Taxes Crypto.

To automatically import your Binance transactions into Taxes Crypto, you need to create a read-only API key. This tutorial guides you step by step. The process takes about 5 minutes.

Important: Read-only only

NEVER check the 'Trading' or 'Withdrawals' permissions. Taxes Crypto only needs the 'Read' permission to import your data. This ensures that no one can make transactions on your account.

Log in to your Binance account

Go to binance.com and log in to your account. If you have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled, complete the verification.

💡 Always use the official binance.com URL to avoid phishing sites.

Go to API Management

Click on your profile icon in the top right corner, then select 'API Management' from the dropdown menu. You can also access the page directly via the Account menu.

💡 On mobile, go to Profile > Security > API Management.

Create a new API key

Click 'Create API'. Choose the type 'System Generated API Key'. Give your key a name, for example 'Taxes Crypto'. Confirm with your 2FA.

💡 The key name is just a label to help you identify it. Use a descriptive name.

Set permissions to READ-ONLY

This is the most important step. In the API restrictions, check ONLY 'Enable Reading'. Do NOT check 'Enable Spot & Margin Trading', 'Enable Withdrawals', or any other permission.

💡 With only the Read permission, it is technically impossible to make transactions or withdrawals via this key.

Set IP restrictions (optional)

For maximum security, you can restrict access to specific IP addresses. If you don't know your IP, you can leave 'Unrestricted access' for now.

💡 IP restriction adds an extra layer of security but is not required for Taxes Crypto.

Copy your API Key and Secret

Binance now displays your API Key and API Secret. Copy them immediately as the Secret will not be shown again. Paste them in Taxes Crypto > Dashboard > Binance Connection.

💡 The API Secret is only displayed once. If you lose it, you will need to create a new API key.
